Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Probably one of the most common strains of cancer, the peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancerous illness that affects the abdominal region in the human body. Although it’s extremely rare and only 100 of 500 americans are afected by it, it’s still one of the most dangerous and painful diseases out there.
As stated earlier, peritoneal mesothelioma affects the two parts that make up the peritoneum. The peritoneum represents a smooth membrane that covers and forms the abdominal cavity. In other words the peritoneum supports the abdominal organs and also serves as a channel or pipe for the their blood and tissue fluid.
The mesothelium is a membrane that incorporates the pleura which is the thoracal cavity, the peritoneum and the pericardium which is the heart sac. There are two types of mesothelioma, one that covers the internal organs and is known as visceral mesothelium and the second one that covers the body walls and is called parietal mesothelium.
Usually the cells that make up the membrane are designed to secreet a fluid which allows the organs to move against one another. The disease causes the cells to go on overdrive and a build up of excess fluid is created in the abdominal cavity.
