The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off (Jonny Kennedy) 3/5

Jonny Kennedy died in 2003 aged 36. He had a terrible genetic condition called Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) — which meant that his skin literally fell off at the slightest touch, leaving his body covered in agonising sores and leading to a final fight against skin cancer. In his last months Jonny decided to work with filmmaker Patrick Collerton to document his life and death, and the result was a film, first broadcast in March 2004, that was an uplifting, confounding and provocatively humorous story of a singular man. Not shying away from the grim reality of EB, the film was also a celebration of a life lived to the full. When it was first shown, The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off captivated nearly 5 million viewers and helped to raise £500000 for the EB charity DebRA. Channel 4 is re-screening the film and re-visiting Jonny’s family to see how they have come to terms with his death and the public’s reaction to the film. Jonny was frank about his feelings on his upcoming death and practical about the arrangements. The film featured moving interviews with his friends and family, including his mother Edna, who had been his life-long carer and faced the prospect of Jonny’s death with disarming mixed feelings, torn between relief for Jonny and knowing that she would miss him desperately.

He’ll be beautiful for eternity in heaven, and that’s all that really matters. Bless his soul, though. He looks 70. :’(

i had similar condition, and i would cry every time they wash and put treatments on my body. it would be difficult to take my socks off especially because it was bad on my leg, i would cry, yell ,scream and beg them to cut my leg off. i was kinda healed when i turned thirteen (so i guess i am one of the lucky ones) i still suffer from hair loss and cant scratch my body too much but i am ok. watching jonny who had it worse made me feel blessed. i love you jonny and thank you for being very brave.

it hurts to see him cry. esp, when his skin just keeps on sticking on to the clothes it wears. it’s like skinning you alive. it hurts.

Oh, that poor man. In all his suffering, he still had a sense of humor. What an incredible person he was. God bless him and keep him.

Sometimes life isn’t far too good people, like jonny or baby P but what we can do is simply ACT on what happens, do something, change something, prevent stuff like this to never happen to people. Cause even if this is rare, its as terrible as a pandemic. Its a young beautiful soul in the chains of a monster body that isn’t right

jenwilzer  on July 30th, 2010

just like the great president J.F.K said “ask not what your country, instead ask what you can do for your country.” he lived more life in his short period of life, then many live in a whole life time. he had such a great soul and personality, worrying about others and their comfort, instead of worrying about himself…we lost a great soul, but gained a beautiful angle, who will never feel pain again…

masonsohi2  on July 30th, 2010
